Health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs) for multi-state employers

An HRA is a formal, employer-funded health benefit that allows you to reimburse your employees tax-free for qualifying expenses, such as individual health plan premiums and other out-of-pocket costs. You simply give your employees a set monthly allowance that they can use to buy medical services and items. Then, you reimburse them up to their allowance amount after they submit proof of an eligible healthcare expense.

The two types of HRAs that are alternatives to traditional group health insurance are the qualified small employer HRA (QSEHRA) and the individual coverage HRA (ICHRA). While they work similarly, they have some distinct differences.

The QSEHRA is for organizations with fewer than 50 full-time equivalent employees (FTEs), while an ICHRA is for companies of all sizes. An ICHRA also provides greater flexibility by allowing you to vary eligibility and allowances using job-based employee classes. If you have a multi-state workforce, a QSEHRA or ICHRA allows your employees to choose the best network of providers and health insurance policies in their area.

A GCHRA can only supplement a traditional group health plan. While it can’t reimburse insurance premiums, it can help your employees save money on their deductibles, copays, and other out-of-pocket costs.

Once employees submit their documentation, our expert team reviews their submissions for eligibility and accuracy. If it’s a qualified expense, you can reimburse them through payroll, check, cash, or bank transfer.
