Public Opinion on Marketplace Security

The public has been buzzing about the security risks associated with using the health insurance Marketplace website. Are the Marketplace websites safe to use? Could there be more potential security breaches?

According to the latest tracking poll from the Morning Consult, 54 percent of pollees are concerned about security breaches in the health insurance Marketplace websites. The September tracking poll was conducted from September 12 to 13, 2014. The Morning Consult polled 2,188 registered voters nationwide about their opinion on the security of the healthcare.gov website. Here are the highlights from September’s tracking poll.

Most Americans Are at Least Somewhat Concerned

The poll results revealed that 54 percent of voters are concerned about security breaches on the health insurance Marketplace websites. The gap between Obama supporters and critics was not significant, with 52 percent of supporters and 56 percent of critics concerned about security breaches on the site.

Most Americans Believe the Information on the Marketplace Is Secure

When asked whether they thought individual’s personal information on the Marketplace was secure, a majority (52 percent) of voters responded that the information was secure. The responses varied among political party affiliation. Less than half (45 percent) of voters who identified themselves as Independent thought the information was secure, while 66 percent of Democrats and 41 percent of Republicans

A Majority of Younger Voters Prefer Online Enrollment

Voters were asked if given the choice of signing up for health insurance online, via telephone, or using a paper application, which they would prefer. Not surprisingly, a majority (55 percent)of younger voters (18 to 20 years old) would prefer an online application process. Almost half of all voters over 65 years old preferred a paper application process.
