New York Health Insurance Exchange Update - Broker Information

Recently, the New York Health Insurance Exchange released details for agents and brokers on preparing for and participating in the NY Health Insurance Exchange, called New York Health Benefit Exchange. Here are details for producers interested in selling through the New York Health Insurance Exchange.

  • Brokers will be a primary distribution channel for small group enrollment in the small business SHOP exchange.

  • Brokers will need to be certified for both the SHOP and individual exchange.

  • Commissions will be paid directly from carriers.

NY Health Insurance Exchange - Training and Certification for Brokers

Here is an overview of the training and certification process for brokers. According to the New York Health Benefit Exchange:

  • Exchange training will be CE credit eligible. CE credits for the small business SHOP exchange training will be 8 credits. CE credits for the individual exchange training is TBD.

  • SHOP exchange training classes begin early August 2013 and continue through 2014. Individual exchange training classes are to be announced, and will be similar to SHOP exchange training. 

  • Certification testing will follow the completion of training.

  • The training format (in-person classroom or online) and the time duration will be announced. 

  • Brokers will be notified of training details via the Exchange website, email, through state associations, and on exchange webinars.
